this is people doing good for others since 1998 with over 700 shows of people doing good for others has highlighted the people and organizations whose Talent determination and dedication make a difference in the lives of if you're at home and throughout the country our goal is to continue to Showcase those Among Us who encourage and Inspire us every day and now the host of people doing good for others Gary or good morning friends in the Acton Valley this is whole doing good for others I'm Gary York and I'm grateful to have this opportunity to share with you today we hope all of your friends are every Saturday morning listeners as we've been involved in this root since 1998 feature guest today a mother and daughter I think our first experience with the this closeness and I've had such a wonderful time of learning new friends today Mary Claire Hooper a junior at Elkin high school I'm so impressed with her because the first time I really got to meet her she was making the Keynote where is the Elkins schools convocation this year and we were all just amazed at how wonderful the speech she made in the things we learn from that her mother Robin Hooper a teacher in Elkin High School and she's been involved in music all of her life she's been a singer and she teaches consumer science courses at Elkin High School play at in Poplar Spring Baptist Church Mary Claire has an older sister Ellie who's the senior at Appalachian State Robin graduated from Appalachian State and their dad Ken is a loser he makes instruments and very accomplished as a tremendous reputation as a guitar maker from Appalachian State with a business degree so first thing I want you to do is tell about the invitation to make the keynote address at the convocation I'm sure a student is never done that so the courage and little bit about that if you will maryclaire but it was a little bit scary because had to speak in front of all of my teachers but it was it was really awesome opportunity to get to maybe encourage them like they've encouraged me over the years that was really a blessing the title was what we expect from our teachers what's up something like that yes it was about what most impacts a student's day when they go to school and the number one thing that I said was their attitudes expect a lot from teachers right decision been taking lessons what is 9 - 17 you playing it all young girls band right now what's the name of it then you chose to fill this youngster starting why you remember and at the time that I was starting to learn my mom and dad's bluegrass band did not have a fiddle so that's why I chose to play with you have you two to place Force I want you to talk about loving what you do Miss Hooper Robin high school with Elkin High School I decided I wanted to teach the biggest reason was because of the influence that people my teachers had had on me whether it be at Mountain Park Elementary School or seeing the impact that my mother who was a piano teacher for many many years the impact that she had on students as well and the relationships that they built and so I decided Appalachia be a great choice for me so I studied education there and ended up teaching Spanish in the elementary school for several years stayed home with our girls for a few years and then came back into education and was asked to teach family and consumer Sciences I was not trying to be a family consumer Sciences teacher as far as my education but what I found what's my life experiences had trained me to be a family and consumer Sciences teacher and build those relationships with my students I never thought about teaching high school and I love teaching high school I love my students we have a good relationship I love what I teach with foods and nutrition one for example which is what I'm teaching all of this school year I get the opportunity to probably teach a hundred so students throughout the year we get to experience a lot of fun things together some of it's not as much fun for them as others but other things but we we enjoy it my students take the class because they choose to take the switch is an awesome thing I think you just very important that you love what you do and I hope my students see that in my life and what I do with them and that's what we always try to encourage our children to do when I try to encourage my students to do the same thing as well pick something that you love can as you mentioned earlier with building instruments he is he's doing what he loves to do and what he's gifted with the ability to do and I feel like it's the same way and with education and reaching the lives of others hopefully doing what you enjoy life goes by fast Robin Hooper is been sharing their experience and hope with us in these last few minutes about being a high school teacher you're also teaching servant ship community service servant's heart thanks cuz I know things you doing this community or about the others matter role model of that and I want to thank you Mary Claire is the incredible fiddle player and I heard her before have been to concerts and so she was the Galax Fiddler's convention last week and this is a tune that she played there so Chevrolet Bluegrass Fiddle In The Name Of Your Song wow how about that I'm so term for the to bring your fiddle with you and share with us I'm wifm so we love that and we talked about the convocation and the church you're also significantly involved in bees raising please tell us how that happen was to get a minute or I was very fortunate to tell the guy named Kelvin guy who is related to us and he was very very willing to help me and teach me about bees and get me started so I'm really enjoying learning about those send not so much getting stung it's a part of it I guess so now that works came from a parking lot it was a hive that had swarmed from somewhere and they called my mentor trying to get rid of them so they ended up coming to my house in a box and a half and that's where they've been ever since so there is probably several hundred to begin with and I've grown significantly we had to add another box on top just a few days ago so they're going to ask a question that we it was so we haven't talked about relationships at school young young people how do you how do you choose just give us some idea if choosing best friends or choose and folks you spend time is that a good question to ask to talk about what is the Dynamics of high school and having different friends and maybe even go into this wonderful science and math school last summer just talked about youngsters in foxy like a lot describe one maybe not the name but just say you know my best friend she's this tell me that a best friend is very sweet and in urgent me and we encourage each other a lot but I think that's a great thing about Elkin High School is that it's so small and that we are able to be friends with pretty much everyone everyone's different but we the different interests in our into different things but we all can get along and find similar grounds and that's really just a blessing to be able to know everybody and have a personal relationship with everybody that you meet hallways at school and it's pretty great high school and your mother Robin you shared that day of the convocation to me that you have always encouraged your children to take advantage of opportunities turn off the bat flip 2 minutes over turn it on husband we have always if the children were interested in doing something if they showed any interest in it then we would try to encourage them to look for opportunities and wet sometimes opportunities come to you that maybe you weren't looking for but if you look at that opportunity and say it's a way that I can grow whether it be in my faith through maybe a mission opportunity or through I'm interested in like playing the fiddle or anything that might help you grow in some air if your life and become a better person a better fiddle player a better Christian what aspect of your life if you're faced with an opportunity that can help you to grow in that then why not try when the girls have approaches in the past and said you know I'm thinking about applying for second touch a scholarship opportunity to do things usually our response to them is what why not apply you already don't have it so what's the difference what are you going to lose if you apply and you don't get accepted or you don't gain that you already don't have it so hopefully you will get it and you'll gain that opportunity and day they are really good about stepping forward and taking that chance both Ellie and Mary Claire are because of that let me know we're really proud of them in the opportunities that they have afforded whether it be a music scholarship through for example I Wayne Henderson scholarship for maryclaire Orem houstonfest scholarship to study music a little bit more weather fiddle-playing is sometimes it causes us to get out of her comfort zone which is obviously not comfortable a little bit when you don't have it now you know why not see if you can acquire that wonderful opportunity came your way and Busey's it tell us what you did the opportunity to attend summer ventures in science and math through the North Carolina School of Science and Math at East Carolina University and there a participated in neuroscience search for Alzheimer's disease and now such an honor because I know that all timers is such a huge problem and it really affects a lot of people around here at has affected our family as well I really enjoyed getting to learn about that used mice with Alzheimer's disease to research experimental drugs that are being developed at East Carolina University so that was really awesome I learned so much and got to meet so many really people how many youngsters in your group you were able to meet how many young men and women high school students there at the camp all of us pretending on different classes and doing different research in my research group there was none of us and we were further broken off into groups of three to do our individual projects with our individual professors and you're also an accomplished member of the right shooting team list really really enjoy doing so glad our high school has a shooting team but I really started to get interested in shooting from my dad because he's always taking me hunting and shooting and fishing since I've been little I've always really really you left that so whenever I got the opportunity to shoot and learn about Hunter Safety at school of course just took up the opportunity and I've really really loved that program what part of the year or the three months at a time or how does it work in November districts which is the competition that we're preparing for all year that happens in March please say we work pretty hard he's really an inspiration to me you guys too much Arch he is just always there if I want to shoot and get better than he's there doesn't matter what time or what day of the week and he's very supportive you want to share that yes sir there are tell me about Mama well several through the school system if it's considered a club elcan shooting sports where it's not a part of like that Letica sociation so stop would he was also the football coach at the highest he is the faculty advisor for this club but it takes quite an army of people to volunteer to help coach shooting team and so we are probably a dozen volunteer images for shooting team on our little Elkins and steam specialty areas like you have archery coaches versus rifle coaches and shotgun turn orienteering hunter safety all of those are part of Elkin Shooting Sports or any shooting sports team and the students can participate in every aspect or just parts maryclaire play clay in years past she has specialized in Rifle you can do as much as you want or you can just kind of hone in on one particular to try everything because it is so fun and I found that even you're like a little bit nervous to try to shoot or shoot a bow for the first time our coaches are so awesome and so nice and encouraging and supportive they make it so comfortable and you really learn a lot every single week do you go every day we have practice on Saturday mornings but we have started in years past having practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school for the students that can come but like I said our coaches are so generous with their time and if you really really want to get better they're there for you 100% I love science teacher this year yes my teacher this year is Miss Janet Acres she teaches biology and some really enjoying that so far I've only been there 2 days right now but I love it remove the robin Hooper I've been quite the inspired if you will buy ask you a question about encouragement to further to be a person who's hazcom the person who's winning the encourage other people to consult people to help people lie and you said that came from home just talk about that little bit we okay I grew up in a nuclear family of my mom and dad and older brother and sister and myself my parents always made sure that we were involved and things that we were interested in they provided opportunities for us as much as because they were both both had full-time jobs my mom also taught piano lessons at nights and on Saturdays and I would be curious to know just how many people she talked and area and the best we can figure she and Katherine Marano I'm going to give a little shout out there to Katherine Moran who is our pianist they have both been doing something in music at Poplar Springs Baptist Church I'm more than 55 years together and so that's a pretty awesome thing to be that dedicated and to see that level of commitment when you're not being paid a year and is such an important part and such a lesson to those of us who grew up seeing that that you can't help but learn from that if you would just open your eyes and see that they have been so committed to that service Senator tuning in the community I don't know how many weddings funerals I'm Mister York ask me about Appalachian and I remember my mom taking classes when I was just a small girl she was taking some piano classes because she knew that she wanted to teach piano I guess we really haven't talked about it that much over the last few years but it's come back to me just in the last little bit and remember probably when I was three or four years old hearing my mother playing the piano in the dark she would because her pieces that she would need to play for her professors in the dark with obviously no music no lights she needed to know them that well when she was that dedicated to learn it and I can remember even as a child just being mesmerized I guess by that and wondered how in the world can you do that I don't play any instruments and she always said someday you'll wish you did and I do wish I did but I don't play any instruments does she did try to teach play I was just hard headed and she she worked really hard and is quite an accomplished musician and still plays the Oregon every Sunday morning one thing to take away from me today both of you and virtually everyone we've mentioned with I think we talking about high expectations there we expect one another to give to be to do our best and that's a pretty good one did just that's pretty solid level thank you know of, make a right decisions and right choices cuz my family expects me to to do the right thing so we share with us about having expectations and wanting to be better one of the goalies Carolina during the summer Wanda play the fiddle and have bees and shoot all the things that you do even go to the football game tonight how does that just tell us a little bit about the you have quality of life and people expect you to do a lot flash a lot more fun when you're doing things you really joy and I think it goes back to what my mom was saying about that just I mean it's been amazing to be encouraged by them to do my best and have high expectations and always take advantage of opportunities but it really does I mean it gives me something to look forward to and like to speech that's just amazing and miss Robin Hooper as we end you'll tell us a little bit about saving as a parent and a teacher and a friend in the audience and your daughter is going to make the keynote address what's the Vault I was very proud of her is proud that she had exhibited such characteristics that they would ask her and I and her dad was we were just both so very proud of her and also proud of her that she would step forward and say yes I will do it and not just say no because I knew she was nervous I tried to encourage her can try to encourage her to say all you know you've got this on it's really good you're you're good but inside I was absolute terrified for her because those are my colleagues that his or her teachers and people that I knew I would be terrified to speak in front of even though I speak in front of students every day this is a completely situation I didn't have any idea about her speech until the morning before she did her speech at convocation I didn't read it I didn't see anything about it until that morning when she turn it off and she said here Mom read this and so I did tear up just a little bit when I read it I did that she got me just a little bit I'm very proud of her and that she would step forward and do it even though I was just absolutely almost sick on my stomach because I was terrified for her to face thank y'all for coming and for when did of seeing you together and the blessings and the yak and Valley of families who it's kind of like we we get
