About Me
I graduated from Northern Vance High School in Henderson, NC, where I grew up with my parents and sisters. I attended East Carolina University where I obtained my Bachelors of Science degree in Science Education, concentrating in Earth Sciences. While at ECU, I played piccolo in the Marching Pirates, attended BSU, and spent a summer in Costa Rica studying geohazards and biology at La Universidad Nacional de Heredia. I began my teaching career in Craven County with my student teaching experience at West Craven High School under the mentorship of Ed Wall. I taught briefly at Bertie High School before accepting a full time position at New Bern High School. I loved my time Down East as a NBHS Bear and taught there for 5 years, during which time I traveled to Japan through a US-Japan partnership to study their education system. My husband, Adam (a graduate of Starmount High School), and I moved to Elkin in 2002. I began teaching at Elkin High School in March 2002 and am proud to be part of the Buckin' Elk family!
I love learning about the intricacies of how the different systems of our earth work together. Our natural world is amazing and beautiful! I have taught Physical Science, Honors Earth/Environmental Science, Earth/Environmental Science, OCS General Science, and AP Environmental Science. I am an AP Environmental Science exam grader for the College Board, achieved National Board Certification in 2009, and work closely with the NC NBCT Network. I am a NC Climate Fellow and NC Energy Literacy Fellow with the UNC Institute for the Environment. At Elkin High School, I am the advisor for Future Teachers of America (FTA) and am co-advisor of the Environmental Science Club.
Adam and I have two boys, Thomas & Luke, who love to laugh and play sports, and also attend Elkin City Schools. We enjoy spending time outside, from the mountains to the beaches.
